About the Area

Juneau, AK Community Resources

Juneau, Alaska offers a uniquely immersive lifestyle where the wild beauty of Alaska meets the comforts of a modern capital city. Located on the Gastineau Channel and surrounded by the vast Tongass National Forest, Juneau’s remote-but-connected setting delivers both tranquility and significance. With a population of roughly 32,000, the community enjoys the intimacy of small-town living while serving as the economic and political heart of the state.

Daily life in Juneau blends natural wonder and civic purpose. Residents can hike to the doorstep of glaciers, kayak past whales and icebergs, or trace the town’s roots back to its gold-rush origins. At the same time, the city hosts essential institutions—government offices, regional healthcare, and the arts—giving the community stability and depth. The dual rhythm of adventure and structure defines living in Juneau.

The cost of living and real estate trends reflect both opportunity and challenge. While remote access shapes many aspects of life, including transportation and goods pricing, median household income remains strong and home-ownership is commonplace. For those who value nature, community, and a place where each season brings spectacular change, Juneau offers a meaningful choice.

Situated amidst mountains, ocean, and rainforest, life in Juneau is anything but ordinary. Whether you’re on a ferry commute, exploring sea caves on the weekend, or attending a cultural event downtown, the sense of place is profound. For anyone seeking purposeful living within nature’s grandeur, Juneau stands out as both refuge and refuge’s gateway.

Juneau is in southeastern Alaska’s Alexander Archipelago. The city is one of only a handful of U.S. capitals with no road access from the rest of the state—it’s reachable only by air or sea. This rarity enhances its charm and sets the pace of life. Surrounded by glacial mountains, fjords, and rainforest, it offers residents access to wilderness previously reserved for vacations.
