Wilkes-Barre, PA Community Resources
Founded in 1769 and the seat of Luzerne County, Wilkes-Barre is located on the Susquehanna River, 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. It is at the center of the Wyoming Valley area with a population of 41,000+, making it the 13th largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Wilkes-Barre and the surrounding Wyoming Valley are framed by the Pocono Mountains to the east, the Endless Mountains to the west, and the Lehigh Valley to the south. The Susquehanna River flows through the center of the valley and defines the northwestern border of the city. Also, conveniently situated in the tri-state area, Wilkes-Barre offers easy access to highways and airports. It is only hours away from major cities like New York and Philadelphia. If you prefer nature to the bustle of an urban setting, Wilkes-Barre is a short drive from the beautiful Pocono Mountains and boasts a number of natural parklands.
Because the bustling city supports two major universities, there are plenty of things for locals and visitors to do. The city has malls, theatres, coffeehouses, and restaurants. Local venues offer concerts, Triple-A baseball, minor league hockey, and arena football. Nearby Pocono Mountains offer year-round outdoor activities, including great skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, and biking.
Niche.com Resident Review:
"I love Wilkes-Barre! I live downtown and it truly has an appealing culture of its own. Wilkes-Barre’s charisma makes this place one of a kind. Diversity is high, location is the best, and the people are more down-to-earth."
