About the Area

Portland, OR Community Resources

Portland, Oregon’s largest city, sits on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Hood. Set in the natural beauty of northwest Oregon and lacking big-city problems like traffic congestion, pollution, and litter, Portland has parks, gardens, and fountains. It’s known for its greenery, bridges, and bicycle paths, as well as for its eco-friendliness and its microbreweries and coffeehouses. Iconic Washington Park encompasses sites from the formal Japanese Garden to Oregon Zoo and its railway. The city hosts thriving art, theater, and music scenes.
Known as the "City of Roses," Portland results from chance and planning. Having obtained its name by the flip of a coin, the city is today the model of a metropolitan area that has been effectively integrated with its environment through controlled growth and development. A deep-water port, an international airport, and a diverse economy make Portland a thriving commercial center. Still, the primary commitment is preserving the city's individuality, healthful environment, and friendly atmosphere.
The vibrant downtown, diverse neighborhoods, and tax-free shopping make Portland and the surrounding communities a shoppers' paradise. With an ethnically diverse population of almost 2 million, Portland is the 28th largest metropolitan area in the country, the fourth largest city on the West Coast, and the largest city in the state. The Portland metropolitan area is made up of portions of six counties. Within each of these counties are cities and towns with their own unique flavor, and within the city of Portland, there are dozens of distinctive neighborhoods.

Portland has appeared on numerous "Best Of" lists, including Money Magazine's "Top 10 Places to Vacation," "Top 10 Best Places to Live," and American Style Magazine's "Top 25 Arts Destinations."

Nearby: Vancouver, WA

(9 miles from Portland)

Living in Vancouver, Washington, offers a unique blend of urban amenities and natural beauty. Nestled along the Columbia River and just a stone's throw away from Portland, Oregon, Vancouver provides residents with the best of both worlds. The city boasts a diverse and growing population, a vibrant arts and cultural scene, and a variety of dining and shopping options. With a mild climate, residents can enjoy year-round outdoor activities, from hiking and biking in the nearby Cascade Mountains to kayaking and fishing on the river.
One of the major draws to Vancouver is its high quality of life. The cost of living is relatively affordable compared to other West Coast cities, making it an attractive option for families, young professionals, and retirees. The city is known for its excellent public schools and a strong sense of community, with numerous parks, community centers, and events that foster a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, Vancouver’s healthcare facilities are top-notch, ensuring residents have access to quality medical care.
The natural beauty surrounding Vancouver is truly remarkable. With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Columbia River Gorge to the east, outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore. The city is also home to a number of parks, including the expansive Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, which offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history. Whether it's enjoying a day at the beach, hiking through old-growth forests, or simply relaxing in one of the city’s many green spaces, Vancouver provides endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.
