About the Area

Charleston, WV Community Resources

Charleston is a happening place — a bustling city of nearly 50,000 people. Known for its constantly growing diversity, Charleston is the capital city, cultural hub, and one of the best places to live in West Virginia. Located in the western central part of the state, Charleston is easily accessible within three to four hours from big cities such as Pittsburgh, PA; Columbus, OH; Charlotte, NC; Cincinnati, OH; Lexington, KY; and more! In addition to its metro access, Charleston's affordable cost of living, great schools, riverside activities, abundant amenities, great eats, and small charm town make it appealing to people of all lifestyles.

Historic and scenic Capitol Street and neighboring Hale and Lee Streets make up downtown Charleston’s centerpiece. You’ll find excellent local eateries, boutiques, art galleries, antique stores, and the public library on tree-lined streets here. If you're craving a bite, grab a pizza by the slice at Graziano's Pizza or have your favorite sushi roll from Ichiban Pan-Asian cuisine. Enjoy Ellen's Homemade Icecream or try a savory treat from the Peanut Shoppe to satisfy your sweet tooth. For your shopping needs, browse the eclectic selection of antiques, artwork, and more. Capitol Street also has many Charleston-based bars and a nice selection of places for a beer or glass of wine.

Located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers, Charleston is an excellent spot to get out on the water for kayaking, boating, and fishing. A few minutes outside of Charleston brings you to Kanawha State Forest, a perfect address with 25 miles for hiking, biking, walking, or just getting outdoors. Pack a picnic, pick up to-go food, and enjoy eating amidst the massive tree canopies.

As the seat of the University of Charleston, the city is home to one of the region's most important institutes of higher learning. The college town vibe makes Charleston full of exciting activities, especially during the academic year. This aspect makes the local economy inclined toward accommodating a college population, with plenty of nightlife, recreational activities, restaurants, opportunities to be active, and natural scenery.

Whether you're looking for scenic views, affordable housing, top schools, 4-season recreation, a family-friendly community, convenient big-city access, or all of the above - Charleston is a fantastic place to live, work, and play.
