About the Area

Morgantown, WV Community Resources

Nestled in and serving as the county seat to Monongalia County, Morgantown has constantly been ranked as one of the best small metropolitan areas in the country for both lifestyle and business climate. Located just over an hour south of Pittsburgh, PA and three hours from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, MD, the Greater Morgantown area offers an incredible sense of community and livability. There is also an excellent school system and an abundance of beautiful homes and recreational activities. With a metropolitan population of 140,000, Morgantown offers quaint, historic neighborhoods near the health science campus or lake living within 20 minutes on Cheat Lake.
Greater Morgantown’s charming legacy is reflected in its architecture, arts scene, area cuisine, and vibrant celebrations. Innumerable customs and traditions passed down over generations are a pulsating part of daily life and make “Mountaineer Country” an epicenter of Appalachian culture. But the region is also an ethnic melting pot stemming back as early as the 1880s into the 1920s coal mines attracted immigrants from Europe. Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, and Italian roots are common in the region, and their heritage has become an indistinguishable part of the Greater Morgantown fabric.
The area offers all the comforts of a much larger city while maintaining the pleasant, slower-paced atmosphere of a smaller community. Visitors and residents alike enjoy conferences at the Waterfront Place Hotel, attending a WVU game, exploring the great outdoors and so much more.
Morgantown is a city that has something for everyone!
