Position Highlights:

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Columbia, South Carolina

Position Highlights

  • Work-Life Balance: A four and a half day schedule with a protected midday break. Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with lunch from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Surgery runs each morning and consultations each afternoon, with four weeks of paid time off and all federal holidays. This is a deliberately paced practice rather than a back-to-back consult and surgery model, structured to protect surgeons from burnout.
  • Desirable Practice Setting: A privately owned oral and maxillofacial surgery group with 33 years in the Columbia market and no corporate or private equity ownership. The practice places the most implants of any group in the Columbia metro, is almost entirely fee-for-service with no Medicaid, and collects 90% of production within 30 days, all supported by a referral base built over more than 30 years. Two free-standing offices in Columbia and Camden, South Carolina, with a third location planned for 2028.
  •  Ideal Work Environment: Both offices are fully digital and fully staffed, equipped with CBCT, intraoral scanners, EMR, digital workflows, and intravenous sedation. The Columbia office has two exam rooms and three operatories, and the Camden office has three exam rooms and three operatories. A dedicated implant and complex case consultant with more than 20 years in practice supports complex case scheduling and completion, and surgical technicians screen all patient calls during business hours.
  • Favorable Call Schedule: No call schedule and no hospital call. Surgeons cover their own patients, and coverage is shared by simple notification when a surgeon is away. Optional hospital oral surgery and facial trauma call is available at the regional Level 1 hospital for surgeons who want additional income.
  • Culture and Support: Three operating surgeons, all board certified and all former instructors, two of whom are former oral surgery instructors and OMS program directors. The practice has a track record of attracting elite talent, including the number one recruited graduating surgeon in the United States in 2022.
  • Partnership and Professional Growth Opportunities: A clear partnership buy-in opportunity in a single-owner practice with room to grow. Full-time owning partners have historically earned $1.2 million to $1.4 million annually on collections of $2.2 million to $3.6 million per surgeon. The planned third office in 2028 offers an incoming surgeon a direct path into practice expansion.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation: Full-time associates are offered a $500,000 base salary. Part-time associates are offered $3,500 to $5,000 per diem on a 1099 basis, or 35% of collections, whichever is greater.
  • Additional Bonus Incentives: Full-time associates earn 35% of collections above a $1.4 million collections threshold in addition to base salary. Additional income is available through optional hospital oral surgery and facial trauma call at the regional Level 1 hospital.
  • Sign-On Bonus: Tiered by experience and contract length. For candidates with highly developed skills and private practice experience: $30,000 for a three-year contract, $40,000 for a four-year contract, and $50,000 for a five-year contract. For recent graduates or part-time candidates: $15,000 for a three-year contract, $20,000 for a four-year contract, and $30,000 for a five-year contract.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package: Comprehensive medical coverage for the family, with dental and vision included in the medical plan. Short-term and long-term disability coverage. Retirement benefits include a 401(k) plus a Cash Balance plan and a Profit Sharing Investment plan. Malpractice premiums are fully covered by the practice.
  • Relocation Assistance: Provided, reimbursed upon receipt.
  • Student Loan Repayment Assistance: The practice will pay student loan monthly payments of up to $3,000 per month for the duration of employment.
  • Professional Development: Enrollment in the practice study club CME program, South Carolina Advanced Implant Studies. The practice covers all CME required for licensure and provides dedicated CME time each year.
  • Additional Perks: All professional and licensure fees are covered, including DEA registration, state board fees, and board certification costs. Four weeks of paid time off, consisting of three weeks of vacation plus one full week for continuing education, plus all federal holidays.

Qualifications

  • Degree: DDS or DMD with completion of an accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency
  • Certifications: Board Certified is preferred
  • Licensure: Active or obtainable South Carolina dental license, with the state permits required to administer intravenous sedation.
  • Skillset: Implant placement, wisdom teeth and full mouth extractions, extraction with bone grafting, and bone grafting and sinus lifting in preparation for implants. Comfort and volume with intravenous sedation is essential, as the surgeon will manage four to six IV sedation cases per surgical morning. The practice does not perform intubated general anesthesia at either office.
  • Experience: Open to any experience in oral surgery
  • Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

About the Area

Columbia, SC Community Resources

Columbia, South Carolina, is a city that surprises and charms with its perfect mix of Southern hospitality, vibrant culture, and natural beauty. As the state capital and home to the University of South Carolina, Columbia offers the amenities of a larger city—think lively music venues, diverse restaurants, and a strong arts presence—without losing its small-town charm. Whether you’re strolling through the historic streets of Five Points or exploring local shops in The Vista, you’ll find a community that’s welcoming, walkable, and full of personality.

Nature lovers will thrive here, with outdoor adventures right at your doorstep. The city is nestled between three rivers—perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or relaxing along the scenic Riverwalk trails. Lake Murray, just 30 minutes from downtown, offers 650 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, and weekend getaways. Plus, Congaree National Park—one of the country’s lesser-known gems—is a short drive away and packed with hiking trails, wildlife, and towering old-growth trees you won’t find anywhere else in the Southeast.

Cost of living is another major win. Columbia offers affordable housing, whether you're looking for a historic home in Shandon, a modern downtown loft, or a peaceful suburb like Lexington or Irmo. And with a low property tax rate and no local income tax, your paycheck stretches further. Families will appreciate the city's well-regarded magnet and private schools, and access to healthcare is top-notch thanks to nationally recognized systems like Prisma Health and MUSC.

Columbia’s location also makes travel a breeze. You're just a couple of hours from the beaches of Charleston and the mountains of Asheville—ideal for weekend escapes. Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) offers direct flights to major hubs, making business and leisure travel simple. And when you’re in town, the city’s growing food and brewery scene, annual festivals, and Gamecock pride keep things exciting all year long.

Whether you're building your career, raising a family, or just ready for a lifestyle upgrade, Columbia delivers a high quality of life with a down-to-earth vibe. It’s a place where community matters, time moves just a little slower, and Southern comfort is more than just a phrase—it’s a way of life.
