Natchitoches, LA Community Resources
Natchitoches, Louisiana, established in 1714, is the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. Pronounced “Nack-a-tish”, the quaint and perky town in the movie Steel Magnolias is real. Situated about halfway between Alexandria and Shreveport on the banks of beautiful Cane River is Natchitoches, the home of Northwestern State University. Experience the charm of the original French colony, and explore Natchitoches’ Landmark Historic District with shopping, dining, and attractions plus historic fort sites, museums, and year around cultural events and festivals. Natchitoches is also recognized as the Bed and Breakfast Capital of Louisiana and home to the Cane River Creole National Historical Park at Oakland & Magnolia Plantations. The National Trust named the town one of the 2005 “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” for Historic Preservation.
The City of Natchitoches, recently named Best Southern Small Town by readers of USA Today and 10Best.com, has a new title to be proud of. Natchitoches was recently named one of the 50 Most Beautiful Small Towns in America by House Beautiful and Good Housekeeping magazines. Natchitoches was the only in the state of Louisiana in the list of winners. The City’s Historic Landmark District, which fronts Cane River Lake and encompasses a 33-block area, includes many historic homes, churches and commercial structures. A mixture of Queen Anne and Victorian architecture, along with Creole style cottages can be seen throughout the district. The city is one of Southern Living Magazine's most talked about communities and is ranked as one of their Top Small Towns in the South, often referred to as an elegant and energetic riverside community and considered New Orleans' older, calmer sister.
There is never a shortage of things to do here. Major festivals are held downtown each year, such as the Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival, the Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival, and the world-famous Natchitoches Christmas Festival and Festival of Lights. Unique shopping and dining opportunities await you, as well as museums, a state historic site, and much more.
