Emergency Medicine Residency Director

The Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking candidates for the position of Emergency Medicine Program Director assist in creating and leading a new ACGME-accredited program in Bloomington, Indiana. The proposed program is anticipated to begin recruiting its first class of residents in the 2024 Match. With the on-site Assistant Designated Institutional Officer, the Chief Academic Officer for the region, and the Indianapolis-based Department of Emergency Medicine, the Program Director will provide vision and guidance in creating the program, including curriculum and policies and procedures around graduate medical education in this new site. Once the program is established, the Program Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and administration of the program as well as ongoing vision and development. The curriculum will focus on providing high quality training around all core emergency medicine topics and principles, with an added focus on community and rural practice.


The program will be supported by the Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center, including a brand new, 356-bed level 3 trauma center in Bloomington, which opened in December 2021. In addition, immediately adjacent, the Indiana University Health Sciences Building, open since December 2020 boasts a state of the art 11,500 square foot interprofessional SIM Center, and beautiful, modern classroom and office space. The Emergency Department of the IU Health Bloomington Hospital currently sees an annual volume of approximately 60,000 patient visits per year, drawing from a referral area of 8,000 square miles, and it is anticipated that the volume will increase in the new hospital. Two rural critical access hospitals in the region, at which the residency is anticipated to have a presence, see an additional 11,000 and 18,000 patient visits each. Emergency Care is supported by an independent physician group, including 23 EM boarded and certified physicians, and an additional 8 experienced EM physicians boarded in Pediatrics, Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. The region provides over 129 hours of physician staffing daily, including scribe support for the two largest facilities. In addition to the level III trauma designation through 2024, the Bloomington Hospital is a stroke center, a Magnet-recognized American nurses credentialing center, and has accreditations and certifications with multiple specialty organizations. Bloomington also boasts the second largest campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine with ~100 students per year and including all four years on the campus.


Bloomington is a lovely, and family-friendly, University town in South Central Indiana. It is just under a one hour drive from the award-winning international Indianapolis airport. The region is known for it’s many outdoor activities, collegiate athletics, a world-class music scene, a thriving LGBTQ population, and international cuisine.


Applicants must have educational leadership experience, with at least three years experience as a core faculty member at an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program, and must be board certified by ABEM or ABOEM. Personal qualities that will be critical for this role include creativity, vision, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to function well in a highly matrixed organizational structure.
