The Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking candidates for the position of Internal Medicine Program Director to assist in creating and leading a new ACGME-accredited program in Bloomington, Indiana. The proposed program is anticipated to begin recruiting its first class of residents in the 2023 Match. With the Assistant Designated Institutional Officer on site and the Indianapolis-based Department of Internal Medicine, the Program Director will provide vision and guidance in creating the program, including curriculum and policies and procedures around graduate medical education in this new site. Once the program is established, the Program Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and administration of the program as well as ongoing vision and development. The curriculum will focus on providing high quality training around all core internal medicine topics and principles, with a strong emphasis on primary care, community and rural practice.
The program will be supported by the Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center, including a brand new, 356-bed level 3 trauma center in Bloomington, anticipated to open in November 2021. In addition, immediately adjacent, the Indiana University Health Sciences Building, open since December 2020 boasts a state of the art 11,500 square foot interprofessional SIM Center, and beautiful, modern classroom and office space. The Emergency Department of the IU Health Bloomington Hospital currently sees an annual volume of 55,000 patient visits per year, drawing from a referral area of 8,000 square miles, and it is anticipated that the volume will increase with the move to the new facility. There are two rural critical access hospitals in the region, at which the residency is anticipated to have a presence. The Bloomington Hospital is a stroke center, a Magnet-recognized American nurses credentialling center, and has accreditations and certifications with multiple specialty organizations. Bloomington also boasts the second largest campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine with ~100 students per year and including all four years on the campus.
Bloomington is a lovely, and family-friendly, University town in South Central Indiana. It is just under a one hour drive from the award-winning international Indianapolis airport. The region is known for it’s many outdoor activities, collegiate athletics, a world-class music scene, a thriving LGBTQ population, and international cuisine.
Applicants must have educational leadership experience, with at least three years experience as a core faculty member at an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program, and must be board certified by ABIM or ABOIM. Personal qualities that will be critical for this role include creativity, vision, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to function well in a highly matrixed organizational structure.
