Education
To become a specialist in Anesthesiology, you will need to acquire a Bachelor's degree. Differing from other specialties, you do not need any specific type of Bachelor's degree to work in Anesthesiology. You will, however, be required to complete coursework in classes such as biology, chemistry, physics, math, and English during your undergraduate education. Before you can apply to medical school, you will need to submit transcripts, MCAT scores, and letters of recommendation. It is important to note that some medical schools offer undergraduate and medical school programs, lasting between 6 and 7 years. From there, you can expect to spend your first 2 years of medical school in classrooms and labs, taking classes in anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, psychology medical ethics, and the laws governing medicine. They also learn to take medical histories, examine patients, and diagnose illnesses. The last 2 years of medical school are spent working with patients under a doctor’s supervision, and rotations will be completed in internal medicine, family practice, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery.

Skills
As an Anesthesiologist, you will need to have communication skills, be detail-oriented, and have patience, compassion, and physical stamina.

Salary + Job Growth
The average salary for an Anesthesiologist is $226,252, which averages out to roughly $109 per hour. It is important to remember, however, that your salary will vary based on your location and your experience level. The Anesthesiology field is expected to grow by 7% by 2030.

Job Duties
As someone working in the Anesthesiology field, you can expect to do things like monitoring patients and their vital signs, adjusting anesthesia levels as needed, and watching for potential emergencies. You will also be responsible for post-surgery care, including prescribing medications to patients who suffer from chronic pain.

Work Environment
Anesthesiologists primarily work in hospitals, but may also work in clinics or treatment centers.
